Ukraine said its drones struck a major oil refinery in Russia’s Saratov region early Sunday, triggering a blaze visible for miles and briefly disrupting flights at the local airport. Video from the site and NASA fire-detection data showed multiple fires across the facility, which has a design processing capacity of about 140,000 barrels of crude a day and is operated by Rosneft PJSC. Saratov governor Roman Busargin confirmed that an “industrial enterprise” had been hit and that debris from a downed drone killed one person in a nearby residential area. Russia’s Defence Ministry said its air-defence units destroyed 121 Ukrainian drones overnight but acknowledged incursions over Saratov and other regions. Kyiv’s General Staff called the refinery strike part of a campaign aimed at degrading Russia’s energy infrastructure and limiting fuel supplies to front-line forces. The attack follows recent Ukrainian drone raids on other refineries, including Ryazan and Novokuibyshevsk, earlier this month. The exchange came as Moscow continued to pound Ukrainian cities. Ukraine’s foreign ministry said guided bombs hit residential areas, a bus station and a clinic in the southern city of Zaporizhzhia on Sunday, injuring at least 12 people. The tit-for-tat strikes underscore the escalating reach of both sides ahead of a planned summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin later this week.
