Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban welcomed the 15 August meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, declaring that “today, the world is safer than it was yesterday.” In a statement posted on social media, the Hungarian leader—one of the few EU heads of government who maintains close ties with the Kremlin—said years of hostility between the world’s two largest nuclear powers appeared to be receding. The Trump-Putin summit, their first face-to-face encounter since 2018, focused largely on the war in Ukraine but ended without a formal agreement. Trump later told reporters that only a handful of issues remain before a potential deal, while Putin said Ukraine’s security must be guaranteed but gave no details. Kyiv reported overnight Russian drone attacks even as the talks were underway. Orban’s praise contrasts with more cautious reactions from other European leaders, who held a conference call with Trump after the meeting to seek clarifications. The European Commission, France, Germany, the United Kingdom and NATO took part in the hour-long discussion, according to the Élysée Palace. No joint statement has been issued.
