Google has unveiled “Gemini for Home,” an AI-powered voice assistant that will replace Google Assistant on the company’s Nest speakers and smart displays. The service draws on the same large-language-model technology behind the Gemini app on mobile devices, promising more natural conversations, contextual understanding and the ability to execute complex, multi-step commands across connected home devices. Gemini for Home will be available through an early-access program starting in October, with both free and subscription options; pricing for the premium tier has not yet been disclosed. Users will continue to activate the assistant with the "Hey Google" wake phrase, while a built-in feature called Gemini Live will enable back-and-forth chat without repeating the wake word, offering help with tasks such as meal planning, troubleshooting household appliances and generating creative content. The launch intensifies competition with Amazon’s generative-AI-enhanced Alexa Plus and precedes any comparable upgrade from Apple’s Siri. Google has not announced new hardware to accompany the software revamp, but industry observers expect refreshed Nest devices to debut alongside the service this fall.
