Wrexham AFC midfielder Ollie Rathbone was taken to hospital for X-rays on Tuesday after injuring his left ankle during the club’s 2–1 pre-season defeat to Sydney FC in Australia. The 28-year-old landed awkwardly following a collision just before half-time and left the field in visible pain before being assessed by team medical staff. Manager Phil Parkinson confirmed after the match that Rathbone had been sent for scans and said the club is awaiting results to determine the severity of the injury. Rathbone was a pivotal figure in Wrexham’s promotion from League One last season, scoring eight goals in 41 league appearances, and any extended absence would hamper preparations for the Welsh side’s first Championship campaign since 1982. Wrexham, owned by actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, open their Championship season in early August. No timeline for Rathbone’s recovery has yet been provided.
