Apple is preparing its most ambitious overhaul of the iPhone in more than a decade, according to details reported by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The company has mapped out a three-year roadmap that begins next year and runs through the handset’s 20th anniversary in 2027. The refresh starts in 2025 with the iPhone 17 Air, described as a thinner and lighter model that will replace the current Plus variant. It is expected to debut alongside the rest of the iPhone 17 line at an event widely rumoured for 9 September. In 2026 Apple plans to ship its first foldable iPhone. The book-style device is said to feature an 8-inch internal screen with a less visible crease, four cameras, an in-display Touch ID sensor in place of Face ID, and Apple’s in-house C2 modem. The handset will rely exclusively on eSIM and is likely to carry a starting price near US$2,000, according to supply-chain analysts cited in several reports. For 2027, the 20th anniversary of the original iPhone, Apple is developing an all-glass model with curved edges designed to complement the “Liquid Glass” interface introduced in iOS 26, Gurman said. The device would mark the third consecutive year of major industrial-design changes. Separately, Apple on 25 August released the eighth developer betas of iOS 26, macOS Tahoe 26 and its other operating systems. The move suggests the software is nearing release candidate status ahead of next month’s hardware event, when the company is expected to finalise the new features that will support the upcoming hardware roadmap.
