Google on Tuesday unveiled a slate of upgrades to AI Mode, its experimental generative-search interface, expanding the product’s reach and functionality on both mobile and desktop. The company is rolling out Search Live with video input, allowing users to point a phone camera at an object and receive real-time answers and links, a capability built on its Project Astra research. AI Mode also gains image and PDF uploads on desktop, letting users query and summarise visual material and long documents. Support for additional file types, including Google Drive content, is promised later this year. A new “Canvas” side-panel helps users build and refine study guides, itineraries and other projects over multiple sessions. Separately, Lens in Chrome will soon add an “Ask Google about this page” option to generate AI overviews of on-screen content. The features begin rolling out this week to participants in the AI Mode Labs experiment in the United States, while the core AI Mode experience has been introduced to users in the United Kingdom. Google’s notebook-generation tool, NotebookLM, is also adding Video Overviews, creating narrated slide decks from user documents.
