Google has begun rolling out a major update to its Gemini AI assistant that allows the chatbot to automatically recall details from previous conversations. The new “Personal Context” setting, enabled by default, lets Gemini use a user’s past chats to tailor future responses without additional prompting. Users can disable the memory function at any time in the app’s settings. The release starts today on the Gemini 2.5 Pro model in select countries, with support for the lighter 2.5 Flash model and additional regions promised in the coming weeks. Google said the capability will initially be unavailable in the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland, and is limited to users aged 18 and over. To address privacy concerns, Google is introducing a “Temporary Chats” mode that lets people hold conversations that will not appear in their history, influence future recommendations or be used to train Gemini. These chats are stored for up to 72 hours solely to complete processing and feedback. Google is also renaming its “Gemini Apps Activity” control to “Keep Activity.” When turned on, the setting allows a sample of future uploads such as files or photos to be used to improve Google services; it remains off for users who previously disabled data sharing. The company said the changes are part of its effort to balance a more personal assistant with transparent data controls.
