X, the social-media platform owned by Elon Musk, suffered a brief outage on Thursday that left users unable to load timelines or post updates. Tracking site Downdetector logged more than 18,000 problem reports in the United States at 10:59 a.m. Eastern time, while global-monitoring group NetBlocks said the incident was international in scope. By 11:20 a.m. the number of reports had fallen to about 600, and the service appeared to be operating normally again. The company’s developer status page continued to list all systems as operational, and X did not immediately comment on the cause of the disruption. The episode is the latest in a string of reliability problems for the platform this year, including a two-day outage in March. The disruption capped 24 hours of instability across major social networks. On Wednesday, WhatsApp Web—the desktop version of Meta’s messaging service—experienced worldwide access problems that Downdetector attributed primarily to website failures. Facebook also recorded a spike in outage reports early Thursday before stabilising. The consecutive incidents have renewed scrutiny of the resilience of the world’s most-used online communication services.
