A newborn baby boy, Mogamat Imaad Sharmar, was abducted from the Middestad Mall in Bellville, Cape Town, on June 28, 2025, when he was nine days old. The mother, Imaan Brandt-Sharmar, had visited the mall with her child and another person. The Western Cape police launched an urgent investigation, appealing for public assistance. The infant was safely recovered two days later on June 30 at a house in Tafelsig, Mitchells Plain, during a police raid. A 37-year-old woman, Sameemah Jacobs, was arrested in connection with the kidnapping and charged with kidnapping and defeating the ends of justice. Jacobs allegedly lured the mother to the mall under the pretense of a workshop for young mothers and used multiple SIM cards and aliases in communications with the mother before the abduction. She appeared in the Bellville Magistrate's Court multiple times, with her bail hearing initially set for July 10 and later granted bail of R4,000 on July 28. Conditions of bail include restrictions preventing her from entering Mitchells Plain and Strandfontein. The family expressed relief and gratitude toward the police for the safe return of the baby. Child safety advocates have called for increased vigilance in communities following the incident.
