A magnitude-5.5 earthquake struck the western Mediterranean at 07:13 local time on Monday, with its epicentre located roughly 50 kilometres southeast of Cabo de Gata off the Almería coast, according to Spain’s National Geographic Institute. The tremor originated at an estimated depth of two kilometres. Shaking was felt in more than 50 towns across the provinces of Almería, Murcia, Granada and as far north as Alicante, prompting 31 calls to Murcia’s 112 emergency service. Andalusia’s regional emergency centre said it had no reports of casualties or significant structural damage. The most notable impact so far is minor: part of a cafeteria ceiling at Almería Airport collapsed, airport authorities said. The IGN has logged at least 13 small aftershocks and cautioned residents that additional seismic activity is possible, though no further disruptions have been reported.
