Spanish public broadcaster RTVE has rehired veteran journalist David Cantero, naming him host of the weekday magazine programme “Las tardes de RNE” from 1 September. Cantero, 63, will replace Lourdes Maldonado on the three-hour afternoon slot, marking his return to the corporation 15 years after he left its television news division. Cantero confirmed the move in a video message after several outlets reported the signing. He said he was “very happy” to be back at what he called “my house” and pledged to “make good radio” despite never having presented a daily show on the medium before. The reshuffle is part of a wider overhaul of RNE’s schedule that will also see Juan Ramón Lucas take over the morning programme. The anchor spent nearly three decades at TVE before joining Mediaset’s Informativos Telecinco in 2010. He was released from Telecinco on 6 March 2025 amid cost-cutting negotiations. His appointment gives RTVE a familiar voice at a time of heightened competition for audiences across Spanish public and private broadcasters.
