Wildfires have been raging in Syria's northwestern Latakia province since early July 2025, devastating over 17,000 hectares of forest and farmland across more than 28 locations. The fires, fueled by extreme heat, strong winds, drought, and the presence of unexploded war remnants, have posed severe challenges to firefighting efforts due to rugged terrain and limited water access. Syrian Civil Defense teams, supported by firefighting units and aerial resources from neighboring countries including Turkey, Jordan, Lebanon, Qatar, and Cyprus, have been engaged in continuous operations to contain the blazes. Turkey has contributed two firefighting aircraft, helicopters, and multiple fire trucks, while Jordanian and Lebanese teams have also deployed ground crews and aircraft. The Syrian Ministry of Emergency and Disaster Management, led by Raed Al-Saleh, has coordinated these efforts, requesting additional support from the European Union. Despite the scale of destruction and the displacement of hundreds of families, no fatalities have been reported, though there have been minor injuries among civil defense personnel. After more than ten days of intense firefighting, authorities announced that the wildfires are largely under control, with only a few hotspots remaining. The fires have caused a major environmental impact, destroying hundreds of thousands of trees and significant agricultural land, and have necessitated evacuations of over 20 towns and villages. Efforts continue to prevent the spread of fires to protected areas such as the al-Farnlaq Forest Reserve. The Syrian Interior Minister Anas Khattab confirmed there is no evidence that the fires were deliberately set. The coordinated international response marks a rare regional cooperation amid ongoing challenges posed by the conflict and terrain in the area.
