Turkey’s Agriculture and Forestry Minister İbrahim Yumaklı said the wildfires that broke out earlier today in Antalya’s Muratpaşa district and Çanakkale’s Lapseki district have been completely contained after combined aerial and ground operations. In Çanakkale, officials reported that roughly 5 hectares of woodland were affected; the blaze is believed to have started in a field, and an investigation has begun into possible negligence. Attention is now focused on Hatay’s Dörtyol district, where a larger forest fire that ignited yesterday afternoon remains active. Provincial governor Mustafa Masatlı stated that the flames, which spread across eight separate points, are partially under control but continue to require extensive suppression efforts. About 5,300 residents from 1,980 homes in Dörtyol and neighbouring Payas were evacuated as a precaution, and 20 people were treated for smoke inhalation. The Ministry has deployed eight helicopters, two fixed-wing water-bombers, more than 440 firefighting vehicles and over 1,200 personnel to the Hatay front. Yumaklı said crews worked through the night on the ground and resumed full aerial sorties at first light, adding that barring unforeseen weather changes the fire’s forward spread appears to have been halted.
