Taylor Fritz broke new ground at Wimbledon on Tuesday, defeating Russia’s Karen Khachanov 6-3, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(4) to reach his first semifinal at the grass-court major. The 27-year-old American, seeded fifth, is the first U.S. man to advance to the last four at Wimbledon since 2018 and the only active American to make a Grand Slam semifinal on a surface other than hard courts. Fritz will meet two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz, who beat Britain’s Cameron Norrie 6-2, 6-3, 6-3, for a place in Sunday’s final. World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka also secured a semifinal berth, rallying past Germany’s Laura Siegemund 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 in a two-hour-54-minute quarterfinal. Sabalenka twice trailed by a break in the deciding set before closing out the 37-year-old qualifier to reach her third consecutive Wimbledon semifinal and 12th major semifinal overall. The Belarusian, still chasing a first title at the All England Club, will face No. 13 seed Amanda Anisimova, who earlier eliminated Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in straight sets. The results complete one half of the semifinal line-ups at this year’s Championships: Alcaraz versus Fritz in the men’s draw and Sabalenka against Anisimova in the women’s. Play resumes on Thursday, when the remaining quarterfinals will decide the other semifinal pairings.
