Stefanos Tsitsipas was forced to quit his opening-round match at Wimbledon on Monday because of a recurring back injury, conceding while trailing French qualifier Valentin Royer 6-3, 6-2 after one hour and 12 minutes of play on Centre Court. The Greek, a former world No.3, called for medical treatment during the second set before deciding he could not continue. The retirement handed the 24-year-old Royer, ranked 113th, the first Grand Slam main-draw victory of his career. The Paris-born left-hander advances to a second-round meeting with compatriot Adrian Mannarino, guaranteeing at least one Frenchman in the third round. Tsitsipas, 26, told reporters he has “tried everything” to overcome the persistent problem and may reassess his future on tour if his condition does not improve: “If I see it continue like this, there’s no point in competing.” The withdrawal extends a run of early exits at majors for the 12-time ATP title-holder, whose ranking has slipped outside the top 20 over the past year.
