Turkey’s main opposition leader Özgür Özel escalated his criticism of the government during a mass rally in Istanbul’s Kartal district on 16 July, pledging that National Education Minister Yusuf Tekin would be tried before the Constitutional Court acting as the Yüce Divan. Addressing thousands at the 37th "Millet İradesine Sahip Çıkıyor" (Protect the National Will) gathering, the Republican People’s Party (CHP) chairman accused Tekin of misconduct over the recent national high-school entrance exam and said a future opposition government would “hold him to account”. Özel also warned President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan that he would "walk this road alone" and face judgment for alleged wrongdoing, telling governing Justice and Development Party (AKP) lawmakers they could no longer appear comfortably in public and urging them to resign "with honour". Similar themes were voiced earlier in the series, including a 5 July rally in Amasya where Özel said the administration had spent funds "1,300 times" greater than what citizens needed for basic necessities. The CHP launched the nationwide rallies after Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, the party’s presidential candidate, was detained on 19 March and jailed on 23 March. Özel’s latest speech reiterated that the opposition aims to overturn what it calls an “unjust order” and restore democratic norms, signalling that accountability for senior officials will be a central plank of its campaign ahead of the next elections.
