The İzmir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office launched an investigation into allegations of corruption and irregularities involving the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality during the tenure of former Mayor Tunç Soyer. The probe targeted accusations including bid rigging and qualified fraud. Authorities issued detention orders for 157 individuals, including Tunç Soyer and CHP İzmir Provincial Chairman Şenol Aslanoğlu. Over several days, the number of detainees reached 137, with many being transferred to court. Subsequently, 42 suspects, including Soyer, were remanded in custody. The investigation revealed that Soyer allegedly manipulated municipal land tenders by transferring property to a cooperative established by his spouse. Following the arrests, labor unrest emerged at the municipality, where more than 20,000 workers had staged a strike. In response, the CHP-led İzmir Metropolitan Municipality initiated layoffs affecting over 1,000 employees, prompting protests and walkouts by the dismissed workers.
