Turkish authorities have launched an extensive corruption and irregularity investigation targeting the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality. The probe, directed by the Izmir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, has resulted in the detention of former Izmir Mayor Tunç Soyer alongside numerous other individuals. Initial reports indicated that up to 157 people were subject to detention orders, with the number later adjusted to 130 and then 137 detainees. The investigation includes allegations of bid rigging and qualified fraud, with specific accusations that Soyer facilitated the transfer of municipal land to a cooperative established by his spouse through corrupt tender practices. Among those detained are high-ranking officials from Soyer's administration and the Republican People's Party (CHP) Izmir Provincial Chairman Şenol Aslanoğlu. Following judicial proceedings, 42 suspects, including Tunç Soyer, were formally arrested and sent to prison. The investigation remains ongoing, with further actions against other suspects continuing.
