Detained Beylikdüzü Mayor Mehmet Murat Çalık was rushed from İzmir’s Buca Kırıklar Prison to an emergency unit on 9 July after his health deteriorated, a day after he underwent surgery for suspected lymphoma. Çalık, who has twice received cancer treatment in the past, had been returned to prison immediately following the operation. Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç told reporters that Çalık’s detention cannot continue once a medical board’s report is issued and endorsed by the Forensic Medicine Institute. The mayor’s lawyers say the latest hospital findings warn that prison conditions could endanger his life and have renewed calls for his release.
