Milliyetçi Hareket Partisi (MHP) Chairman Devlet Bahçeli endorsed a call by opposition leader Özgür Özel for court proceedings to be broadcast live on state-run TRT, saying transparent hearings would allow the public to “see the white sheep from the black.” Speaking at his party’s weekly parliamentary group meeting on 8 July, Bahçeli urged prosecutors and judges to consider the request and pledged his party’s support for measures that would bolster public trust in the judiciary. Bahçeli pressed the courts to accelerate indictments in a series of graft investigations targeting Adana, Antalya and Adıyaman municipalities run by the Republican People’s Party (CHP). Describing the probes as proof of a “network of organised corruption,” he argued that prolonged proceedings risk deepening political polarisation and should be concluded before the judiciary’s summer recess. Turning directly to CHP Chairman Özel, Bahçeli condemned the opposition leader’s earlier remarks about mobilising street demonstrations, asking whether Özel was “planning a coup” and warning that any unlawful protests would meet a firm state response. He also criticised attempts to link recent nationwide forest fires to government policy, calling such claims “opportunistic and irresponsible.” The nationalist leader framed the controversy within his broader “Terörsüz Türkiye” agenda. He commemorated the 12 soldiers who died from methane gas poisoning in Iraq’s Pençe-Kilit operation on 6 July and said efforts to eradicate terrorism were entering a decisive phase. Bahçeli’s speech underscores escalating rhetoric between the governing coalition partner MHP and the main opposition CHP as Turkey faces intensifying anti-corruption probes and security challenges.
