Nielsen’s mid-year report on U.S. streaming habits shows that established library titles, not new originals, dominated viewing between January and June 2025. Disney+’s children’s series “Bluey” led all programs with 25.1 billion minutes watched, well ahead of long-running broadcast imports such as “Grey’s Anatomy” (22.6 billion) and “NCIS” (19.1 billion). Animated stalwarts “Family Guy,” “Bob’s Burgers” and “Spongebob Squarepants” also ranked inside the top ten, underscoring the pull of comfort viewing and kids’ content. Only three streaming-only originals cracked Nielsen’s overall top-20 list: Netflix’s “Squid Game” at 15.0 billion minutes, Amazon’s “Reacher” at 13.3 billion, and Netflix thriller “The Night Agent” at 12.2 billion. The data highlight how infrequently freshly commissioned series can break through the clutter compared with multi-season catalogs that encourage repeat viewing. The findings signal a further erosion of Netflix’s dominance. The company’s share of the most-watched shows on streaming has fallen to roughly 50 percent—down from more than 80 percent in 2021—as Disney+, Prime Video and Paramount+ make inroads with both legacy franchises and selective originals. Analysts say the trend intensifies pressure on streamers to secure proven IP and manage content costs as the battle for viewer attention and retention widens.
