European governments and Kyiv mounted a coordinated push on Sunday to ensure Ukraine is represented in a 15 August summit in Alaska between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. In a joint declaration, the presidents of the European Commission, France, Italy, Poland and Finland, along with the leaders of the UK and Germany, said “the path to peace in Ukraine cannot be decided without Ukraine” and insisted that any talks start from the current line of contact and be preceded by a cease-fire. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy welcomed the statement and reiterated that any accord reached without Kyiv would lead to “dead solutions.” EU foreign-policy chief Kaja Kallas convened an emergency meeting of the bloc’s foreign ministers for 11 August, warning that all “temporarily occupied territories belong to Ukraine” and that Europe’s security must be reflected in any settlement. The White House has said Trump remains open to upgrading the Alaska meeting into a trilateral summit with Zelenskyy, but is for now preparing the bilateral format requested by Moscow. Vice President JD Vance, who met Ukrainian and European officials outside London on Saturday, told Fox News that Washington is working to schedule a separate Putin-Zelenskyy encounter and hopes to craft a deal both sides can “live with,” even if neither is fully satisfied. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte described the Alaska talks as a test of Putin’s willingness to end the war, stressing that any arrangement must uphold Ukraine’s sovereignty and reject legal recognition of Russia’s land grabs. European capitals are also urging Washington to keep sanctions pressure on Moscow, and several leaders are seeking their own calls with Trump before he sits down with Putin.
