Russian forces carried out a large-scale overnight barrage on Ukraine that killed at least 10 civilians and wounded dozens, Ukrainian officials said Monday. In Kharkiv, five Shahed-type drones struck a five-storey apartment block at around 5 a.m. local time, killing seven people — among them an 18-month-old girl and her 16-year-old brother — and injuring 23. Emergency crews continued searching the rubble for survivors. Three more people died and roughly 23 were hurt when an Iskander ballistic missile hit the southeastern city of Zaporizhzhia. Farther south, drones ignited a fire at an oil depot owned by Azerbaijan’s state-run SOCAR near Odesa, damaging all 17 storage tanks and related infrastructure, according to Ukraine’s energy ministry. Ukraine’s air force said Russia launched about 140 Shahed drones and four missiles during the night, of which 88 drones were shot down — the heaviest drone attack reported since 4 August. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned what he called a “demonstrative and cynical” assault intended to pressure Kyiv hours before his meeting in Washington with U.S. President Donald Trump and European leaders. Zelenskyy is expected to seek strong security guarantees amid U.S. efforts to broker a peace deal with Moscow.
