U.S. President Donald Trump said decisions on any territorial swaps between Ukraine and Russia will be left to Kyiv, even as the issue is expected to come up in his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday. “They’ll be discussed, but I’ve got to let Ukraine make that decision,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One, adding that he is “not here to negotiate for Ukraine” but to bring the parties to the table. Trump indicated that security guarantees for Ukraine could be fashioned with European and other partners, but he offered no details. His delegation to Anchorage includes Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other senior officials, underscoring the administration’s effort to secure at least a preliminary cease-fire or framework for talks in the three-and-a-half-year-old war. The comments follow Trump’s 11 Aug remarks that both Moscow and Kyiv would “have to cede land to each other” to end the conflict—statements that drew concern in European capitals and from President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s government about potential pressure on Ukraine to accept concessions. Russia controls roughly one-fifth of Ukrainian territory, while Kyiv rejects giving up land as the price of peace. European Union foreign-policy chief Kaja Kallas and other leaders have warned against any deal that rewards Russian aggression, insisting on an unconditional cease-fire and stronger sanctions if necessary. Trump said he will brief European counterparts after the Alaska talks and signaled openness to a subsequent meeting that would include Zelenskiy alongside Putin.
