United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Saturday condemned Russia’s latest wave of drone and missile strikes on Ukraine, calling it the largest attack since the full-scale invasion began more than three years ago. Ukrainian officials said the overnight barrage of 3–4 July involved roughly 550 drones and missiles and struck Kyiv and several regions; the Kremlin cited 539 drones and 11 missiles. At least one person was killed and 26 were wounded in the capital as air-defence systems battled the assault for several hours. Guterres warned that the strikes briefly cut external power to the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, underscoring what he called an ongoing risk to nuclear safety. Attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure “are prohibited under international law and must stop immediately,” his spokesman Stéphane Dujarric said. The UN chief urged a full, immediate and unconditional cease-fire and noted that United Nations monitoring has recorded 12,605 civilian deaths and 29,178 injuries in Ukraine since February 2022. The condemnation comes amid stalled peace efforts, including two inconclusive rounds of talks held in Istanbul earlier this year.
