Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he will travel to Washington on Monday for talks with U.S. President Donald Trump, setting the stage for a fresh attempt to end Russia’s 3½-year-old invasion. The White House meeting was arranged during a 90-minute call early Saturday that was later joined by European and NATO officials, Zelensky said. He added that the two leaders will “discuss all of the details regarding ending the killing and the war” and voiced support for Trump’s idea of a follow-on trilateral summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump, returning from an Alaska summit with Putin that yielded no cease-fire, wrote that “it was determined by all” that negotiations should move “directly to a Peace Agreement,” rather than pursue an interim truce that “often times do not hold up.” The statement marks a shift toward Moscow’s preference for a comprehensive settlement and diverges from Kyiv’s earlier insistence that talks start only after the guns fall silent. Leaders from France, Germany, Italy, the U.K. and other European nations welcomed Washington’s push in a joint statement but stressed that any accord must include iron-clad security guarantees for Ukraine and uphold its internationally recognised borders. Zelensky likewise said European involvement is vital at every stage of the process. The diplomacy comes amid continuing hostilities. Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia launched a ballistic missile and 85 Shahed drones overnight, 61 of which were shot down, underscoring the urgency of any forthcoming negotiations.
