Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he will travel to Washington on Monday, 18 August, for talks with U.S. President Donald Trump. The announcement came one day after Trump’s summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, Alaska, ended without a cease-fire or a roadmap to end the war that began with Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. Zelensky wrote on X that he and Trump held a “long, meaningful” phone call lasting more than an hour and a half, later joined by European and NATO officials. He said the two leaders will “discuss all of the details regarding ending the killing and the war” and thanked Trump for the invitation to the White House. The Ukrainian leader endorsed Trump’s idea of a trilateral meeting with Putin, stressing that European partners should be involved at every stage and that Kyiv requires iron-clad security guarantees. Trump indicated that, if Monday’s discussions are productive, a further session with Putin could be scheduled. Fighting continues on the ground, and Kyiv maintains that any negotiations must be preceded by a cease-fire, even as Washington now favors moving directly to a comprehensive peace agreement.
