European Union leaders said they are prepared to help arrange a three-way summit among U.S. President Donald Trump, Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky and Russia’s Vladimir Putin, aiming to revive stalled efforts to end the war in Ukraine. In a joint statement issued on 16 August, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer offered “full support” for talks that would bring Kyiv directly into negotiations following the previous day’s U.S.–Russia meeting in Alaska. While welcoming Trump’s initiative, the European leaders said they would “continue to strengthen sanctions and broader economic measures” to maintain pressure on Moscow until a “just and lasting peace” is achieved. The Alaska meeting between Trump and Putin produced no cease-fire, prompting EU capitals to push for Zelensky’s participation in the next round of diplomacy.
