A 42-year-old Provo, Utah, resident, Brian Astle, died while descending an off-trail climbing route on the west face of Mount Gould in Glacier National Park, the National Park Service said. Rangers received a distress call at about 5:54 p.m. on Wednesday, 9 July, after Astle fell above the popular Highline Trail. Search-and-rescue teams, including Two Bear Air and the park’s Advanced Life-Support and Emergency Rescue Team, located Astle that evening but delayed recovery until daylight for safety. His body was airlifted at roughly 10 a.m. Thursday and transferred to the Flathead County coroner. Mount Gould, the highest point on the park’s Garden Wall at 9,557 feet, is known for steep, off-trail routes that require advanced climbing skills. The National Park Service is investigating the circumstances of the fall and has not disclosed how far Astle fell. Officials urged visitors to evaluate route difficulty and changing conditions before attempting similar ascents.
