Florida authorities have taken custody of Harjinder Singh, a 28-year-old Indian national who allegedly killed three people on Aug. 12 when he tried to make an illegal U-turn across the Florida Turnpike in St. Lucie County. Singh, who entered the United States illegally in 2018 and later obtained a commercial driver’s license in California, was flown from Stockton, California, to Tallahassee late Thursday after being arrested by federal agents earlier in the week. He faces three counts of vehicular homicide and could receive decades in prison, Governor Ron DeSantis said at a press conference. Lieutenant Governor Jay Collins, who accompanied U.S. Marshals on the flight, said the extradition underscores Florida’s intent to “throw the book” at the driver and pursue further civil action against the California-based trucking company that employed him. Federal regulators have already suspended the firm’s operating authority, according to state officials. DeSantis criticised California for licensing a driver who, investigators say, could not sufficiently read English road signs. Immigration and Customs Enforcement separately disclosed the arrest of Singh’s 25-year-old brother, Harneet Singh, who was a passenger in the rig and is also in the United States illegally. Both men remain in custody while the Department of Transportation reviews the crash and the carrier’s safety practices. The case has intensified debate over immigration and commercial-driver licensing. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced a temporary halt on new work visas for foreign commercial truck drivers after the incident, while DeSantis highlighted a widened operation between the Florida Highway Patrol and the Department of Homeland Security that has already detained hundreds of undocumented migrants. Investigators have not yet released the names of the three victims.
