President Donald Trump said Tuesday he is weighing whether to allow a “major lawsuit” against Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, escalating his long-running dispute with the central bank’s chief. In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump accused Powell of overseeing a renovation of the Fed’s Washington headquarters that has ballooned to roughly $3 billion, a figure the president said should have been “a $50 million fix-up.” Trump called Powell “Too Late” and repeated that the Fed “must now lower the rate,” arguing that delayed policy moves have caused “incalculable” economic damage. A White House spokesperson later confirmed that the possibility of legal action is under review but declined to provide further details. Fed documents have put the combined cost of upgrading the 1930s-era Eccles Building and adjacent structures, including security and safety improvements, at about $2.5–3.1 billion. Trump’s threat heightens pressure on the Federal Reserve ahead of its 16-17 September meeting, where investors already anticipate a rate cut. Earlier on Tuesday government data showed core consumer prices rising 2.7% in July, slightly below forecasts, tempering concerns that the administration’s 145% tariff on Chinese goods would rekindle inflation.
