The Democratic National Committee has quietly spent more than $15 million this year to retire roughly $20 million in unpaid bills from Vice President Kamala Harris’s failed 2024 presidential bid, according to reports by the New York Times and Axios. The arrangement stems from a post-election handshake deal under which party officials agreed to cover outstanding obligations so Harris could claim her campaign ended debt-free. Harris’s campaign burned through about $1.5 billion in 15 weeks before she lost the election to Donald Trump, leaving invoices that included $548,050 for charter flights, about $3.5 million for a social-media influencer firm, more than $2 million to media producer Assembly House LLC, $237,201 to law firm Covington & Burling, and $100,000 to an entertainment company co-founded by LeBron James. Small-dollar donors were solicited repeatedly after the election without being told their contributions were earmarked for past-due expenses. The payments have strained the DNC’s balance sheet, leaving the committee with only about $15 million in cash at the end of July, compared with $80 million for the Republican National Committee. Party officials are also covering more than $1 million in legal fees for former President Joe Biden, further tightening resources. Democratic fund-raisers say donor fatigue is growing, and some contributors are pressing Harris to step up her own efforts to replenish party coffers. Former campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon said the vice president “remains fully committed to strengthening the party,” yet critics argue the opaque debt deal has complicated the DNC’s push to rebuild ahead of the 2026 midterms.
