California Governor Gavin Newsom has sent a letter to former President Donald Trump warning that efforts by Texas Republicans to redraw congressional maps could "destabilize our democracy." Newsom called the message a "final warning," pledging that if Texas moves ahead he will lead a drive to revise California’s already heavily Democratic boundaries to offset any Republican gains. Newsom’s intervention follows remarks by Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who told local broadcaster KWTX that Republicans could "eliminate" 10 of the 12 Democratic-held House seats in Texas if a nationwide redistricting battle erupts. Texas holds 38 seats in the U.S. House, 25 of which are currently Republican, with one vacancy. Republicans are seeking to add five seats in Texas before the 2026 midterm elections, a push endorsed by Trump. Nationally, the GOP controls 219 House seats against Democrats’ 212, with four vacancies, leaving the majority in play. Legal experts say any aggressive maps in either state are likely to trigger court challenges, continuing a long-running partisan fight over gerrymandering.
