President Donald Trump said Thursday he is considering asking the Republican National Committee to stage a full national convention shortly before the November 2026 congressional midterms, an event that would break with the U.S. tradition of holding party conventions only in presidential election years. Writing on Truth Social, Trump said the GOP is “poised to win big in the midterms” and that a convention held “just prior to the Midterms” would be a first for the party. House Speaker Mike Johnson quickly endorsed the idea, calling it a way to energize voters in what is normally a lower-turnout election cycle. The proposal comes as both parties escalate efforts to shape the 2026 landscape. Republicans in Texas have already approved a map that eliminates five Democratic-leaning U.S. House seats, while Democratic governors in California and New York are pushing plans that would erase an equal number of GOP seats. Axios reported this week that Democrats are weighing a large-scale rally of their own ahead of the midterms. The Republican National Committee has not said whether it will act on Trump’s suggestion or where a convention might be held. If adopted, the gathering would give the party an additional platform to showcase candidates and fundraising strength, potentially reshaping how U.S. parties prepare for non-presidential elections.
