Vance Promotes Trump Tax-Spending Law at Wisconsin Steel Plant

U.S. Vice President JD Vance visited a steel-fabricating plant in La Crosse, Wisconsin, on 28 August to promote the administration’s sweeping tax-and-spending package that President Donald Trump signed on 4 July. The stop is part of a nationwide Republican blitz during the August congressional recess aimed at selling the measure in states likely to decide control of Congress in 2026. Vance cast the law as a catalyst for an American manufacturing revival and "historic" middle-class tax relief, echoing Trump’s push to rebrand the legislation from the "One Big Beautiful Bill" to the "Working Families Tax Cut." The package extends the 2017 tax reductions, eliminates taxes on tips and overtime pay, and offers incentives for domestic investment. Democrats argue the law tilts toward the wealthy and threatens safety-net programs. A Pew Research Center survey in August found 49 percent of Americans oppose the measure, while only 29 percent support it. The Congressional Budget Office projects the statute could leave 12 million more people without health coverage over the next decade and trim nearly $1 trillion from Medicaid. Wisconsin officials estimate the changes could strip coverage from about 276,000 residents and reduce food-assistance funding by $314 million annually. Trump and Vance won the battleground state by less than one percentage point in 2024, and Thursday’s visit marked Vance’s first trip there since the election as Republicans work to shore up support ahead of the 2026 midterms.
