Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic socialist, is leading the New York City mayoral race by a wide margin according to recent polls and prediction markets. A Siena College poll conducted from August 1 to 4 among 313 registered voters shows Mamdani with 44% support, significantly ahead of former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who has 25%. Other candidates, Curtis Sliwa and incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, trail with 12% and 7% respectively. Mamdani's net favorability stands at +14, while Cuomo's is -17. Prediction market Polymarket currently gives Mamdani an 82% chance of winning the election, the highest recorded for him, with Cuomo at 9% and Adams at 7%. Mamdani enjoys strong backing from voters under 35 and a plurality of those aged 35 to 54. However, he faces notable opposition within the Jewish community, with 75% expressing unfavorable views of him according to Siena College polling. Additionally, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has declined to endorse Mamdani, citing concerns about his ability to appeal to a broader electorate and pointing to controversy over Mamdani living in a rent-controlled apartment. Mamdani's campaign has sought advice from various leaders, including former NYPD chiefs, state Democratic Party leader Jay Jacobs, and former Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan. The race has drawn attention for its ideological implications, with critics warning of a socialist shift in New York City politics. Despite this, Mamdani's position as the frontrunner appears strong as the election approaches.
Will Zohran Mamdani win the NYC Mayoral Election?
CNBC's Joe Kernen just hit Hakeem Jeffries with the facts: "Where is the calamity that you're talking about? It almost seems like for Democrats, socialism is the answer to these problems." https://t.co/YMbcCRuRJ4
You think NYC is in bad shape now, if Mamdani wins, all of the money will flee the city. It's gonna be BAD, but hell, let it happen and maybe these fools will finally learn.
