The Federal Bureau of Investigation executed search warrants on 22 Aug 2025 at former national security adviser John Bolton’s home in Bethesda, Maryland, and at his Washington, D.C., office. A source familiar with the matter said the operation is part of a national-security investigation into whether Bolton unlawfully disclosed classified information, including material that appeared in his 2020 memoir, “The Room Where It Happened.” Agents removed boxes of documents, and the bureau confirmed law-enforcement activity at both locations. The new probe revives a dormant Justice Department case first opened during Donald Trump’s initial term, when the government sued to block publication of Bolton’s book. That lawsuit and a related criminal inquiry were shelved under the Biden administration. Bolton has denied wrongdoing and accused officials of using classification rules to silence criticism. Bolton made his first public comments since the raid in a Washington Examiner op-ed on 25 Aug, saying that Trump’s Ukraine policy is “no more coherent today than it was last Friday when his administration executed search warrants against my home and office.” He argued that recent White House talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky lack clear objectives and could leave the conflict further from resolution. Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on 22 Aug, President Trump said he learned of the FBI action from television reports, adding that he is “not a fan of John Bolton” and had no prior knowledge of the search. Trump compared the operation to the 2022 search of his Mar-a-Lago estate, where agents looked for government records, saying both raids went “through everything,” including personal family areas. Bolton told an online forum on 26 Aug that he remains concerned about personal security after the Trump administration terminated his Secret Service detail on Inauguration Day, despite an earlier Justice Department finding that Iran had plotted to assassinate him. “You can either be overwhelmed by it or keep going,” he said, vowing to continue speaking out while the investigation proceeds.
