A Republican-led House Oversight Committee on Tuesday subpoenaed the US Department of Justice for all records tied to the Jeffrey Epstein sex-trafficking investigation, requesting internal files and related correspondence with identifying information about victims removed. Committee Chair James Comer also ordered closed-door depositions with ten former senior officials, including former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Hillary Clinton is scheduled to testify on October 9 and Bill Clinton on October 14. The panel seeks evidence from six former attorneys general—Merrick Garland, William Barr, Jeff Sessions, Loretta Lynch, Eric Holder and Alberto Gonzales—as well as former FBI directors James Comey and Robert Mueller. Comer said the subpoenas are intended to clarify how federal authorities handled the Epstein probe and its offshoots. Interest intensified after a subcommittee vote last month in which three Republicans joined Democrats to demand the Justice Department’s files. The inquiry also references Epstein associate Ghislaine Maxwell, who received a 20-year prison sentence in 2022. The action heightens friction within the Republican conference; Speaker Mike Johnson has tried to slow the push, and President Donald Trump has publicly urged lawmakers to drop it. The Justice Department and the individuals named had not commented on the subpoenas as of Tuesday afternoon.
