A Texas district court has placed Alex Jones’s media company, Free Speech Systems LLC, into receivership, authorizing the seizure and liquidation of its Infowars assets to help satisfy more than $1.3 billion in defamation judgments owed to families of the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. Judge Maya Guerra Gamble signed the order at an Austin hearing, citing delays in payment and the risk that further inaction would deny justice to the families. The court appointed Gregory S. Milligan of Harney Partners as receiver with authority to take possession of studio equipment, intellectual-property rights and other assets, sell them, and distribute the proceeds to the Connecticut plaintiffs whose claims are covered by the ruling. The order allows law-enforcement officers to secure Infowars facilities and could shut Jones out of his current studio within days. Juries in Texas and Connecticut found Jones liable in 2022 for repeatedly portraying the massacre, which killed 20 children and six educators, as a hoax. Those verdicts resulted in combined damages of roughly $1.45 billion. Jones has yet to make any significant payments and continues to contest the awards in bankruptcy and appellate proceedings, including a pending petition to the U.S. Supreme Court. The receivership revives the possibility of an eventual sale of Infowars; satirical publisher The Onion had been the winning bidder in a court-ordered auction last year before a federal bankruptcy judge nullified the transaction over process concerns. Judge Guerra Gamble scheduled a 16 September hearing to consider placing the separate Texas judgment into receivership and to address allegations that Jones misrepresented company assets.
