Delta Air Lines told members of Congress on 1 August that it has never used, and does not intend to use, artificial intelligence to set fares based on an individual passenger’s personal data. In a letter viewed by multiple media outlets, the carrier said “our ticket pricing never takes into account personal data,” seeking to calm criticism from lawmakers who warned that so-called “surveillance pricing” could raise prices to each traveller’s “pain point.” The pledge follows questions from Democratic Senators Ruben Gallego, Mark Warner and Richard Blumenthal, who cited earlier remarks by Delta President Glen Hauenstein suggesting the company could tailor prices to what customers might be willing to pay. Delta now says the technology under evaluation only analyses aggregated demand, competitive offers and cost factors, and that all customers continue to see the same fares for the same itinerary and booking conditions. While rejecting personalised pricing, Delta confirmed it is testing AI-based revenue-management tools developed with Israeli startup Fetcherr and aims to deploy them across about 20 percent of its U.S. network by the end of 2025. The software is intended to speed fare adjustments to market conditions and reduce manual work for analysts, the airline said, adding it has “zero tolerance for discriminatory or predatory pricing.” The exchange comes amid broader scrutiny of algorithmic pricing. House Democrats Greg Casar and Rashida Tlaib last week introduced the Stop AI Price Gouging and Wage Fixing Act, which would bar companies from using personal data to set prices or wages. American Airlines chief executive Robert Isom has also warned that personalised AI pricing could erode consumer trust.

Is it mandated for airline announcements to be so damn loud? Can I speak with the manager? You just woke my two sleeping kids with your useless announcement, which should be a crime. <shakes old woman fist>
