In early to mid-July 2025, numerous U.S. lawmakers have been hosting a series of telephone town halls and virtual meetings to discuss the implications of President Donald Trump's recently enacted budget legislation, often referred to by Democrats as the "Big Ugly Bill" or "Big Beautiful Bill." These events have been organized across various congressional districts, including Texas's 30th district, Arizona, Michigan, Southern Illinois, Oregon's 6th district, and others. The discussions focus on the bill's impact on health care, Medicaid, Medicare, SNAP benefits, affordable housing, and local communities. Several representatives, such as Rep. Greg Stanton, Rep. Bobby Scott, Rep. Cuellar, Senator Elissa Slotkin, and others, have emphasized concerns over the bill's effects on health care access and affordability, warning that it could negatively affect millions of Americans. Other topics addressed include the President's reconciliation bill, the redrawing of Texas's congressional map by Governor Abbott, and recovery efforts following recent floods. Lawmakers have encouraged constituents to participate by submitting questions in advance and joining live streams or phone calls to engage directly on these issues.
