Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong’o revealed on 15 July that she was diagnosed with uterine fibroids in 2014—undergoing surgery to remove 30 non-cancerous tumors—and joined a group of Democratic lawmakers on Capitol Hill to press for stronger federal support for women’s reproductive health. Speaking during Fibroid Awareness Month, Nyong’o said the condition, which the Mayo Clinic estimates affects 80 % of Black women and 70 % of white women by age 50, is widely ignored despite its debilitating impact. At the event, Representative Shontel Brown announced the filing of the U-FIGHT Act in the House, with Senator Angela Alsobrooks introducing a companion bill in the Senate. The measure would expand National Institutes of Health funding for fibroid research, improve screening and data collection, and launch public-education campaigns aimed at earlier detection and less invasive treatment. It forms part of a broader legislative package backed by Reps. Yvette Clarke and Bonnie Watson Coleman and Senator Laphonza Butler that also targets uterine cancer and other maternal-health disparities. Nyong’o said she is partnering with the Foundation for Women’s Health on a research grant to develop minimally or non-invasive treatments for the roughly 15 million U.S. patients living with fibroids. Lawmakers and advocates urged Congress to move quickly on the bills, arguing that addressing uterine health could curb lost productivity, fertility complications and chronic pain for millions of women.
