Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said he feels “perfectly safe” walking in Washington, D.C., dismissing Republican lawmakers’ warnings about rising crime as “full of it.” In an interview released this week on the podcast “The Parnas Perspective,” the New York Democrat described early-morning walks near the Capitol and monuments and insisted the capital’s streets do not justify extraordinary security measures. Schumer’s comments came as President Donald Trump moved to federalize the city’s Metropolitan Police Department and deploy 800 National Guard troops, a step the White House says is needed to curb violence. The administration is also preparing legislation for a D.C. Security Fund that would allow extended federal control beyond the 30 days permitted under the Home Rule Act. Asked whether Democrats would support Trump’s plan, Schumer replied “No f***ing way,” pledging to fight the proposal “tooth and nail” and calling it a distraction from other controversies. Conservatives countered that Schumer’s confidence is buoyed by his taxpayer-funded security detail, arguing the senator is out of touch with ordinary residents. Democrats point to police data showing overall crime near a 30-year low, even as Washington police have made more than 100 arrests since Aug. 7.
