U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren has called for a federal investigation into Paramount Global's $16 million settlement with former President Donald Trump, raising concerns that the payment may constitute bribery. Warren highlighted that Paramount, which is seeking approval from the Trump administration for a billion-dollar merger with Skydance, has refused to respond to congressional inquiries about the settlement. She described the situation as "bribery in plain sight" and emphasized the need to determine if anti-corruption laws were violated. Alongside Senators Bernie Sanders and Ron Wyden, Warren has initiated a probe into the matter. In response to this and similar settlements, Warren and other Senate Democrats, including Richard Blumenthal, have introduced the Presidential Library Anti-Corruption Act. This legislation aims to regulate donations to presidential libraries and prohibit large contributions from corporations and foreign governments that could be used to influence administrations or settle legal disputes. The bill follows other recent settlements involving Trump, such as one with Disney, and addresses longstanding concerns about transparency in funding for presidential libraries. Warren stated that no one should have to wonder if donations to a president’s future library are a form of bribery, underscoring the bill’s intent to curb potential corruption. The legislation currently lacks Republican support.
