Since late June 2025, western Venezuela has been severely affected by intense rainfall, causing widespread flooding, landslides, and infrastructure damage across multiple states including Mérida, Táchira, Trujillo, Barinas, Apure, Amazonas, Bolívar, Portuguesa, and Guárico. The heavy rains led to the overflow of rivers such as the one in Apartaderos, Mérida, which destroyed homes and displaced thousands of families. Approximately 8,400 people were evacuated, with more than 8,000 families reported affected overall. The flooding resulted in the collapse of at least 25 bridges, including a major highway bridge on the José Antonio Páez autopista near Ospino, severely disrupting transportation and isolating communities. In Mérida alone, nearly 400 houses were damaged or destroyed, and over 600 families in indigenous communities in Apure were affected. The landslide in the Fernández Feo municipality of Táchira buried at least 18 homes and displaced 295 families. Agricultural losses have been reported, with more than 150 hectares in Mérida and over 6,000 hectares of crops lost in Bolívar and Portuguesa. The Orinoco River's rising levels have forced evacuations in Amazonas and Bolívar, with hundreds of families taking refuge in temporary shelters. The Venezuelan government activated emergency response plans, including the Sistema de Gestión de Riesgos and the Andes 2025 plan, and received international aid such as 43 tons of assistance from the Chinese community for Apure. Medical teams have attended to hundreds of affected individuals. The ongoing rains have maintained a state of emergency in several regions, with thousands of hectares destroyed and continuous risks of further flooding and landslides.
