Nintendo has confirmed that its forthcoming Switch 2 title, Donkey Kong Bananza, is being developed by the same internal team that created 2017’s critically acclaimed Super Mario Odyssey. The company made the disclosure during recent hands-on preview sessions, ending months of speculation over which studio was behind the first fully 3D Donkey Kong game in 26 years. Nintendo said only that the group is based in Tokyo—widely understood to be Nintendo EPD Tokyo—and declined to name individual directors or producers. Media outlets given two-to-three-hour demos reported a gameplay focus on large-scale environmental destruction, animal transformations and a co-operative mode featuring a young Pauline. Early impressions describe the project as a potential flagship release for the new hardware. Donkey Kong Bananza launches on 17 July and is expected to bolster the Switch 2’s first-party line-up, following the console’s launch earlier this year. Its development by the Odyssey team suggests Nintendo is relying on one of its most experienced groups to introduce the platform’s inaugural 3D platformer.
