Nintendo’s month-old Switch 2 hybrid console is drawing a wave of user complaints about overheating that can trigger freezes, crashes and system shut-downs. TechRadar and Tom’s Hardware reported on 2 July that owners in Japan, the United States and other markets say the hardware becomes excessively hot in both handheld and docked modes, with some players receiving on-screen warnings before the device enters sleep mode. The problems are surfacing across a range of software, from graphically intensive titles such as Cyberpunk 2077 to lighter games like Pokémon and Splatoon. Tom’s Hardware measured surface temperatures of 117°F (47°C) while the unit was docked and 102°F (39°C) in handheld use; multiple users also note that the dock’s fan runs at maximum speed without preventing thermal throttling. Nintendo advises owners to keep vents unobstructed, relocate the dock to a well-ventilated area or let the system cool before resuming play, and says units that continue to overheat should be sent in for repair. The US$449.99 device has already faced criticism over its LCD display and higher US$80 software pricing, making thermal performance the latest in a string of post-launch controversies. Despite the issues, demand for Switch 2 remains strong after its 5 June release, and the company is preparing for the 17 July debut of Donkey Kong Bananza, the console’s first major first-party exclusive since launch. Nintendo has not yet said whether a hardware or firmware fix is planned for the overheating complaints.
