Amazon on Tuesday began offering the Nintendo Switch 2 in the United States, ending a months-long absence of the Japanese gaming company’s new console from the world’s largest online retailer. Product pages for the $450 console and a $499 Switch 2–Mario Kart World bundle went live on 8 July, coinciding with the start of Amazon’s Prime Day sales event. US shoppers cannot immediately add the devices to their carts. Instead, Amazon is using an invitation-only ordering system that it says is designed to curb scalping and spread availability among individual customers. Selected buyers will receive a purchase link that remains valid for 22 hours, according to the retailer’s listing. The listings follow reports of a rift between Amazon and Nintendo that had kept first-party hardware and software off the platform since last year. Both companies denied a dispute after Bloomberg in June attributed the hold-up to pricing conflicts with third-party sellers, but neither detailed the reasons for the pause. Switch 2 has been a runaway hit since its 5 June launch, with Nintendo saying the device is the fastest-selling game console on record. Prior to Amazon’s move, US buyers were limited to retailers such as Walmart, Best Buy and Target, where supplies have been sporadic. Amazon has not said when open sales will replace the current invite system.
