European Union and national leaders issued a joint statement on Saturday welcoming U.S. President Donald Trump’s effort to halt the war in Ukraine after his 15 August meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. Signatories—including Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, France’s Emmanuel Macron, Germany’s Friedrich Merz and the U.K.’s Keir Starmer—said Trump briefed them and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy earlier in the day. The leaders declared they are ready to help organise a trilateral summit bringing together Trump, Zelenskyy and Putin, and endorsed Washington’s willingness to offer Kyiv “ironclad security guarantees.” They stressed that no restrictions should be placed on Ukraine’s armed forces or its defence partnerships, and insisted that decisions on territorial issues rest solely with Kyiv. While praising the Alaska talks as a step toward a “just and lasting peace,” the statement warned that European sanctions on Russia will be strengthened and maintained as long as fighting continues. Trump, who described his encounter with Putin as “very productive,” is scheduled to host Zelenskyy at the White House on Monday to discuss next steps.
