Trump Presses Direct Russia-Ukraine Peace Deal After Alaska Talks
U.S. President Donald Trump said on Saturday that all parties now agree the "best way" to end the Russia-Ukraine war is to negotiate a comprehensive peace accord rather than pursue an interim cease-fire, which he called unreliable. He outlined the position in a post on his social-media platform, arguing that a full agreement would “end the war” outright. Trump’s remarks follow his three-hour meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska, on Friday. While the summit yielded no immediate truce, both leaders described the talks as constructive. After leaving Alaska, Trump held a conference call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and several European leaders to brief them on the discussions. Zelenskyy said he spoke with Trump for more than an hour and will travel to Washington on Monday, 18 August, for further talks at the White House. Trump indicated that, if those discussions progress, a second meeting with Putin could be scheduled. The Kremlin, however, has not confirmed any trilateral session and said details of the peace framework remain unresolved. Fighting continued during the diplomacy: Kyiv reported that Russian forces launched 85 attack drones and a ballistic missile overnight, of which 61 drones were shot down. European officials reiterated support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity and said any settlement must be acceptable to Kyiv. No timetable has been set for drafting or signing a final peace accord.
